Tablut

During the Dark Ages a family of similar games were played by a number of Northern European peoples. The most famous of these is Hnefa Tafl, played by the Vikings (was it played in Canada?). These games died out after the introduction of chess in the 11th Century.

Tablut was played by the Sami of Finnish Lapland. It is special for two reasons: it is the best-documented game of this type, and it was played as late as the 19th Century.

The white pieces represent tall blonde Swedes. The black pieces represent Muscovites. The goal of the white pieces is to have the king escape to a corner of the board, while the black pieces try to capture the king.  All pieces move like rooks in chess and all pieces capture by surrounding the enemy piece on two opposite sides.  Don't assume that the black side has the advantage!

How good is this game?
Tablut may be the most likable traditional game sold by Oak Games.
The gameplay is moderately complex and the rules are moderately complex.
